Texas Electric Consumer Tip: How to Clean Your Air Conditioner & Save On Your Energy Bill
A clean air conditioner is an energy efficient air conditioner. And, the more energy efficient your unit is, the more it saves you on your Texas electric bill. Following is a step-by-step tutorial on how to clean your AC unit just in time to garner summer savings.
1. Unplug: After you unplug it, remove the unit’s front cover.
2. Remove All Filters: To get an idea of how dirty your filters are, hold them up and look at them in direct sunlight. If no light is passing through, your filters are really dirty --- which means your unit is working overtime to keep your home cool.
3. Remove Dirt: You can use a brush to do this. Once you’ve brushed as much dirt as you can off, move on to Step 4.
4. Wash with Soap & Water: Remove remaining dirt by washing with warm soap and water.
5. Replace All Filters: After this is done, it’s time to clean the exterior.
6. Clean Unit Exterior: For a thorough clean, take a toothbrush to remove lint, dirt and debris from between the crevices on the front of the unit. Then, wipe it down with a moist cloth to give it a new shiny look.
7. Plug In: And enjoy the cool, clean air.
Another Way to Save on Your Energy Bill This Summer
Enroll in the LITE-UP Texas Program. What is this? It’s a no-deposit electric service plan that gives Texas residents a discount on their energy bills during the hot months of May through September.
Even if you have to save up to pay a deposit to take advantage of energy savings like this, it’s worth it because you get the lowest rates around which can really add up, especially if you’re currently on a prepaid electric service plan, which means you’re paying some of the highest rates in the state.
Also, if you are a tenant at an apartment or home and your landlord attempts to turn your electric utilities off for non-payment of rent you have some laws in your favor. Read more here
