Electricity Consumers Scammed by Electric Companies

Pennsylvania Electric Consumer Tip: Why Many Consumers Can Be Scammed for So Long

Some Pennsylvania electric customers may be the victims of a scam which can cost them hundreds of dollars more per year in energy costs. And, many don’t even know it. What is this scam? Electric cramming. Following is what electric cramming is, and why so many Pennsylvania electric consumers fall victim to it.

Electric cramming is when energy suppliers who are not providing you service add unauthorized charges to your bill.

“But,” you may be thinking, “I would know if a company that’s not providing me service is charging me.” Not necessarily, and following is why.

Pennsylvania Electric: Competition Breeds Confusion

In a deregulated electricity market like the one Pennsylvania has, many new companies have come on the scene. This makes it harder for consumers to keep up with which companies are providing them with what service.

To further complicate the situation, sometimes Pennsylvania electricity consumers get more than one bill, eg, you may get one bill from your natural gas distribution company (NGDC) and another one from your natural gas supplier (NGS).

In short, confusion reigns.

To prevent being a victim of electric cramming, all you have to do is keep a close eye on your energy bill(s) and contact your legitimate supplier if you spot unauthorized charges.

As long as you’re keeping a watchful eye on your Pennsylvania electric bill, one other thing you might want to check is how much you’re paying per kilowatt hour (kWh). If you’re on a prepaid electric service plan, you may be shocked to find out how much more you’re paying for energy.

On average, Pennsylvania residents pay anywhere from 10 to 12 cents per kWh. As a prepaid electric plan customer, you may be paying 13, 14 or 15 cents per kWh.

Conventional Pennsylvania energy suppliers have low-deposit and no-deposit electric service plans that can cost you a lot less. Ask your company’s representative for programs you may qualify for.
